Abstract
New advances in recombinant DNA technology have opened up a new way to study specific animal genes. We chose the collagen gene as a model to study gene structure and regulation for several reasons. This gene encodes a group of interesting proteins. In animal tissues, these proteins are the main components of the extracellular matrix. Their main function is to provide a structural skeleton for cells to contact each other.
