Abstract
Objective To observe the effects of different frequencies of stretching on the histological manifestations and expression of type ¢ñ and type ¢ó collagen of rabbit Achilles tendon, and to explore the relationship between stretching frequency and tendinopathy. Methods 45 male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups. One group served as a control group without electrical stimulation, and the other two groups applied electrical stimulation to the gastrocnemius muscle to stretch the Achilles tendon. The electrical stimulation frequencies were 0.17 and 1 Hz respectively. The histological changes of rabbit Achilles tendon were observed under light microscope, and the expression of type ¢ñ and type ¢ó collagen was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results After 4 weeks of stretching, type I collagen in the 1Hz group was significantly reduced, and the expression of type III collagen was significantly increased, but the total amount of collagen was reduced. After 6 weeks of stretching, the Achilles tendon tissue in the 1 Hz group showed pathological characteristics of tendinopathy; the expression of type ¢ñ collagen in the 0.17 Hz group increased significantly, while the expression of type ¢ó collagen showed no significant change. Conclusion High-frequency stretching can cause the occurrence of Achilles tendinopathy, while low-frequency stretching may have a repairing effect on damaged Achilles tendon.
