Experimental Study On Repairing Facial Nerve Defects In Rabbits Using Chitosan-Collagen Regeneration Chamber And Double Bridging Technology

Abstract
Objective To explore the feasibility of using double bridging technology and chitosan-collagen regeneration chamber to repair long facial nerve defects in rabbits. Methods: Thirty healthy Chinese big-eared white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups in the experiment, namely the double bridge group (Group ¢ñ), the in situ nerve anastomosis group (Group ¢ò), and the normal blank control group (Group ¢ó). A 15mm defect model of the inferior buccal branch of the right facial nerve in rabbits was surgically created, and repaired using double bridging and in situ nerve anastomosis. Gross observation, nerve electrophysiological testing, histological observation, and image analysis were performed 12 weeks after surgery to evaluate the nerve repair. Results At 12 weeks, the chitosan-collagen regeneration chamber in group I had obvious absorption without foreign body reaction. It could inhibit the formation of surrounding fibrous connective tissue and provide a good microenvironment for nerve regeneration. In group II, the anastomosis was enlarged and surrounded by scar-like tissue. The neuromuscular function of group ¢ñ recovered well, and statistical analysis showed that the nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and compound muscle action potential amplitude (M wave) detection results were similar to those of group ¢ò (P>0.05), but had not yet returned to normal levels (P <0.01). Conclusion Double bridge technology is a simple method to repair long-segment nerve defects and the effect is certain. The chitosan-collagen regeneration chamber has good biocompatibility and is suitable for implantation in the body to repair nerve defects.
