Abstract
Objective To explore the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) and type II collagen in human embryonic condylar cartilage. Methods Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and immunohistochemical staining were used to detect the expression of ER¦Á, ER¦Â and type II collagen in each layer of the condylar cartilage of human embryonic temporomandibular joint. Results Type II collagen was mainly expressed in the transition layer and hypertrophic layer of condylar cartilage. ER¦Á is mainly expressed in the transition layer and hypertrophic layer of condylar cartilage, and is evenly distributed in cells; ER¦Â is concentrated in the hypertrophic layer, and is mainly distributed in the nucleus. There was no expression of type II collagen and ER in the fibrous layer and proliferative layer, but there was a small amount of expression in the calcified cartilage layer. Conclusion ER and type II collagen are distributed consistently in condylar cartilage. Estrogen can selectively bind to different subtypes of ER, thereby regulating the ability of condylar chondrocytes to secrete type II collagen.
