Steady-State Rheology And Thixotropic Behavior Of Collagen/Isopropyl Alcohol Blend Solutions

Abstract
The effects of isopropyl alcohol on the steady-state shear, yield stress and thixotropic properties of collagen solutions were investigated using a rheometer. Experiments show that at low shear rates, the concentration of isopropyl alcohol has a greater impact on the viscosity of the system, while at high shear rates, the viscosity of each system is insensitive to the concentration of isopropyl alcohol. The power law equation and the Carreau equation can well fit the flow curve of the collagen/isopropyl alcohol blend solution, and accurately describe the rheological properties of the blend solution through the viscosity coefficient K, non-Newtonian index n and zero-shear viscosity. Through the yield stress test, it was found that the addition of isopropyl alcohol reduced the yield stress of the system and improved the flow properties of collagen, but it also increased the instability of the system. In addition, the thixotropic area of the blend solution containing 1 mol/L isopropyl alcohol is smaller than that of the pure collagen solution, and the entangled structure can be restored quickly, while the thixotropic area of the blend solution containing 2 mol/L and 3 mol/L isopropyl alcohol is larger than that of the pure collagen solution. In collagen solution, the structure damaged by shearing recovers slowly and the solution instability increases.
