Abstract
Abstract: Collagen fibers play a stretching and reinforcing effect on biological tissues. Their functions can be explained by the properties of three tissues: tendons, articular cartilage and intervertebral discs. Tendons connect muscles and bones around joints in the human body. Articular cartilage covers the end surfaces of most joint bones, and intervertebral discs connect the vertebrae to make it a flexible structure. The degree of enhancement ¦Â is defined and determined by the volume component of collagen in the tissue. The reinforcement effect coefficient eta depends on the orientation of the fiber. The fibers in the bond are wavy. The first step in tendon deformation is to straighten the corrugated fibers to increase the eta value. As a result, when the strain is at low strain values, the stress will increase rapidly. When the corrugated fiber is straightened, eta=1. Articular cartilage is able to support external compression because it has high internal expansion pressure. Collagen fibers strengthen tissue because they are oriented so that they strain in response to this pressure. Intervertebral discs are roughly columnar, and they consist of an inner core area and an annular structure surrounding the inner core. These annular structures are composed of collagen layers. The collagen fibers in each layer are parallel but tilted at a certain angle to the spinal axis. Twisting and bending stretch some fibers, which strengthen the disc. Since not all fibers are stretched, the pressure applied is not evenly distributed. Thus, twisting and bending are potentially damaging forces. Compression of the intervertebral disc stresses all the fibers. External compression damages the bones of the spine without damaging the ring structure
